About the Leaf Beetle

One of the largest beetle families with over 37,000 species. The Colorado potato beetle nearly wiped out potato crops in the 1800s and has evolved resistance to over 50 insecticides. Many species are brilliantly colored as a warning to predators. Some species are important biological control agents for invasive weeds. They are among the most speciose groups of herbivorous insects. Their larvae often feed on the same plants as adults. Some species secrete defensive chemicals. They are found in virtually every habitat on Earth. Many are important agricultural pests.
