About the Elephant Beetle

Named for the long trunk-like horn on males. They are nocturnal and attracted to lights. Their exoskeleton is covered in fine hairs that give them a yellowish appearance. Larvae develop in rotting logs for 2-3 years. Despite their size, they are gentle and rarely bite. Males use their horns in combat for mating rights. They play important ecological roles as decomposers. Their size makes them one of the most impressive beetles in the Americas. Populations affected by deforestation.
