About the Luna Moth

One of the most beautiful moths with pale green wings and long curved tails. Their tails spin as they fly, confusing bat echolocation - a sonic defense mechanism. Adults live only 7 days and have no mouthparts. They were the first North American moth to be illustrated in color (1705). Their caterpillars click their mandibles and regurgitate fluid as defense. Light pollution disrupts their mating cycles. They have eyespots on all four wings. Once considered a symbol of beauty in American entomology.
