About the Katydid

Named because their song sounds like katy-did-katy-didnt. They are masters of leaf mimicry - many species look exactly like leaves, complete with veins, spots, and bite marks. Some species can detect bat echolocation and drop from flight to avoid being eaten. Their ears are located on their front legs. Over 6,400 species. Some are predatory, catching and eating other insects. They produce the loudest insect sounds at night in tropical forests. Their long antennae can exceed their body length.
