Carpenter Bee
About the Carpenter Bee
They bore perfectly circular holes in wood to create nesting galleries. Despite their intimidating size, males cannot sting at all and females rarely do. They are important pollinators, especially for deep-throated flowers that honeybees cannot access. They can buzz-pollinate (vibrate flowers to release pollen) - essential for tomatoes and eggplants. They are solitary - each female builds her own nest. They overwinter as adults in their tunnels. Over 500 species worldwide.
