Stick Insect

About the Stick Insect

The longest insects in the world - Phryganistria chinensis reaches 35 cm. Their name Phasmatodea means phantom - they are masters of camouflage, indistinguishable from twigs and leaves. Some species sway like branches in the wind to enhance the illusion. Many reproduce parthenogenetically - females clone themselves without males. They can regenerate lost limbs over successive molts. Over 3,000 species described. When camouflage fails, some flash brightly colored underwings to startle predators.
