Odonata

Description

Odonata is an order of predatory flying insects that includes dragonflies (Anisoptera), damselflies (Zygoptera), as well as the three relict species of damsel-dragonflies (Anisozygoptera), the latter two often grouped together. These groups are distinguished by the bulkier build, larger, usually contiguous, compound eyes, and, a typically horizontal resting position of wings of dragonflies, and by the slender body, smaller, laterally-placed eyes, and, a typically closed resting position of the wings of damselflies. Intermediate characters are found in damsel-dragonflies (Epiophlebia). Adult odonates can land and perch, but, contrary to myth, can also rarely walk.
