About the Earwig (Giant)
Giant earwigs can reach 8 cm including pincers. Despite their fearsome appearance, they are harmless to humans. They are among the few insects that show maternal care. The mother guards her eggs, cleans them to prevent fungal growth, and feeds the nymphs for their first few days. Some species can fly but rarely do. Their hind wings are intricately folded under short forewings - the most complex folding mechanism in nature. Engineers study the folding pattern for satellite solar panel design. They are omnivorous and can be beneficial garden predators.
