About the Camel Spider

Urban legends claim they can jump 2 meters and run 40 km/h - both exaggerated, though they are very fast (16 km/h). They are not actually spiders but a separate order (Solifugae). They have enormous chelicerae (jaws) relative to body size - up to one-third of body length. They are solitary nocturnal hunters. They have no venom despite popular belief. They can eat up to 10% of their body weight per day. Over 1,000 species. They are found in deserts on every continent except Antarctica and Australia.
